One Engine, One Transmission, Four Grades

Nissan keeps the 2026 Frontier simple under the hood. Every grade uses the same 3.8-liter Direct Injection Gasoline DOHC 24-valve V6, rated at 310 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 281 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm, with idle stop/start. It is naturally aspirated, so there is no turbocharged four-cylinder, no hybrid and no diesel anywhere in the range. A nine-speed automatic is standard on every trim and no manual gearbox is offered. Four-wheel-drive models add a switch-operated two-speed transfer case with 2WD, 4HI and 4LO settings. EPA estimates for 2026 are 19 city, 24 highway and 21 combined for 4x2 trucks; 17, 21 and 19 for 4x4; and 16, 20 and 18 for the PRO-4X. All run regular gasoline from a 21-gallon tank.

The 2026 Trim Walk: S, SV, PRO-X and PRO-4X

The 2026 lineup runs to exactly four grades: S, SV, PRO-X and PRO-4X. The SL grade and the King Cab SV offered for 2025 are not part of the 2026 range, and King Cab is now an S-only body style. Several changes arrive this year. A new Dark Armor package for the SV grade adds dark 17-inch alloy wheels, a dark grille, dark mirror caps, dark door handles, dark tailgate lettering and a dark headliner. A terrain mode selector is newly optional on SV 4x4 and standard on PRO-4X. Citrus Strike, a neon lime shade, joins the palette on the PRO grades. PRO models gain standard heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and remote engine start, while SV and PRO grades pick up an eight-way power driver seat.

Cabs, Beds and Drivetrain Combinations

Two cabs and two bed lengths combine into three body styles, and each grade is tied to specific ones.

  • King Cab with the six-foot bed: S grade only, seats four, offered 4x2 or 4x4.
  • Crew Cab Short Bed, five feet: S, SV, PRO-X and PRO-4X, seats five.
  • Crew Cab Long Bed, six feet: SV and PRO-4X only.

Drivetrain follows the grade. S and SV can be had either way, PRO-X is Crew Cab 4x2 exclusively, and PRO-4X is Crew Cab 4x4 exclusively. Nissan lists the five-foot bed at 59.5 inches of cargo length and 40.1 cubic feet, and the six-foot bed at 73.3 inches and 49.2 cubic feet. The Utili-track channel system with two adjustable tie-down cleats is not standard: Nissan lists it as package content on the SV and PRO grades.

Towing and Payload by Configuration

The headline figures, up to 7,150 pounds of towing and up to 1,590 pounds of payload, both belong to a single build: the S King Cab 4x2. Every other configuration sits below them, so the published matrix is worth reading before matching a truck to a trailer. All numbers are pounds, towing first.

  • King Cab 4x2 S: 7,150 and 1,590. King Cab 4x4 S: 7,000 and 1,430.
  • Crew Cab 4x2: S 7,070 and 1,490, SV 7,000 and 1,480, PRO-X 6,900 and 1,430.
  • Crew Cab 4x4: S 6,960 and 1,330, SV 6,880 and 1,310, PRO-4X 6,680 and 1,220.
  • Crew Cab Long Bed 4x2 SV: 6,920 and 1,400.

The heaviest, most trail-focused builds carry the lowest ratings in the range.

What the PRO-4X Adds Off-Road

The PRO-4X is the four-wheel-drive off-road grade, and most of its hardware is standard rather than boxed into an option. It carries an electronic locking rear differential, Bilstein off-road performance shock absorbers, 265/70R17 all-terrain tires on 17-inch PRO aluminum-alloy wheels, skid plates for the oil pan, fuel tank and transfer case, hill descent control, a terrain mode selector, black overfenders and Lava Red tow hooks. A front skid plate, by contrast, is standard on every grade. One nuance matters: PRO-X already shares the Bilstein dampers, all-terrain tires, PRO wheels, overfenders and red tow hooks. What PRO-4X genuinely adds is four-wheel drive itself, the locker, the underbody plating and hill descent control. Active Brake Limited Slip is standard across the range.

Interior, Infotainment and Safety Technology

A seven-inch Advanced Drive-Assist Display sits in the instrument cluster on every grade. The S uses an eight-inch NissanConnect touchscreen, while SV, PRO-X and PRO-4X move up to a 12.3-inch unit as standard. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard throughout, wired on the S and wireless on SV and PRO grades, and a Wi-Fi hotspot is available. An available Fender premium audio system runs ten speakers. Crew Cabs seat five with a 60/40-split flip-up rear bench; King Cabs seat four. Safety Shield 360 is standard on all grades and bundles automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear automatic braking, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning and high beam assist. Intelligent Cruise Control, rear sonar and Intelligent Driver Alertness are standard as well.

Where the Frontier Sits in the Mid-Size Class

Among 2026 mid-size pickups the Frontier stands out as much for what it leaves out as for what it includes. Chevrolet fits every Colorado with a 2.7-liter turbocharged four rated at 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft, and quotes up to 7,700 pounds of towing. Toyota sells the Tacoma with a turbocharged four, an available i-FORCE MAX hybrid reaching 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft, and a six-speed manual that is paired with the non-hybrid engine. The Frontier answers with one naturally aspirated V6, one automatic and a short, legible trim ladder. U.S. News ranks it sixth of seven in the segment, calling it rugged and capable with a stylish cabin while noting that rivals offer more variety. Shoppers who prize mechanical simplicity over powertrain choice will weigh that trade differently.
